The Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers named the recipients of its annual appreciation awards — including one from Maui — at the recent 28th annual Hawaii International Tropical Fruit Conference at Leeward Community College in Pearl City on Oahu.

The annual awards tap individuals who advance — through research, education and practice — the use of tropical fruits to support a sustainable, local food industry.

One of this year’s five recipients, Ken Yamamura, is from Maui.

Yamamura, an agricultural specialist for the County of Maui, earned a service award for dedicated years of service to the isle’s agricultural community and the state.

The multiday conference was presented by the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers and was open to the public.
