Human Resources adds on to the hilarious Netflix adult animated comedy series Big Mouth. But why was Human Resources canceled after only two seasons?
Big Mouth’s spinoff Human Resources is ending after only two seasons. Following the Hormone Monsters from the massively successful Netflix adult animated series Big Mouth, Human Resources adds to the Big Mouth universe with Love Bugs, Logic Rocks, and Ambition Gremlins, to name a few. Big Mouth and Human Resources have surpassed more than one billion hours viewed on Netflix, making it one of the streaming platform’s most popular animated series – making Netflix's decision to cancel even more peculiar.
In April 2023, it was announced that Human Resources' second season would be its last. With Big Mouth’s popularity, this came as a bit of a shock. After all, Big Mouth’s announced eighth season makes it the longest-running adult scripted original series in Netflix history, surpassing Grace & Frankie at seven seasons. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Nick Kroll’s Big Mouth will end in 2024 with its eighth and final season.
Human Resources & Big Mouth Are Both Ending On Netflix
When asked about Big Mouth’s ending, Netflix’s Director of Adult Animation Billy Wee commented “We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious series to share with fans before this brilliant coming-of-age story reaches its conclusion.” Big Mouth and Human Resources’ final seasons come after some recent changes in the Netflix animation department. In July 2022, the head of Netflix’s adult animation Mike Moon left to focus on other projects. Moon worked as an animator for 15 years and became director after his impressive work on Bojack Horseman, F Is For Family, and Big Mouth. HBO Max executive Billy Wee took Moon’s position in October 2022.
Moon’s history as an animator certainly came in handy as a Director of Adult Animation. But even with the change in direction and the end of Big Mouth, Nick Kroll’s animated production company Brutus Pink will continue to write and produce animated projects for Netflix. Human Resources may not have reached its full potential, but since the main series Big Mouth is ending, it makes sense the less popular spinoff would also come to a close.
Human Resources Season 2 Will Still Connect To Big Mouth Seasons 7 & 8
While Human Resources is ending, the characters won’t be entirely gone. Netflix announced that Human Resources will tie into Big Mouth’s final seasons. The final seasons of Big Mouth will therefore serve as a sendoff for both shows as the characters and the stories lead into the new seasons of Big Mouth, providing some closure for both series. This means that, though there are only two seasons specifically focused on the Human Resources characters, the nature of the Big Mouth universe means that their stories will still get attention.
